At night, the radio operator
Is sweeping through stations and
Reading the paper
Streaking through the sky
Just barely caught in the moonlight
Sliding through the clouds
And pounding as hitting the ground
I just had to lie
As they disappeared past the skyline
One by one, they shoot
I saw each breaking into two
I’m trapped in a dream
In which I can’t scream
Turn on the T.V.
I hear sirens near
“Mother worms” the news man said
Have come to colonize and spread
Encased in mineral they drifted
Here, faster than the light
Emerging all around me
(Fading into view)
Revealing through a thick mist of
(Prussian blue)
One, two, three, four children
(From the trees)
Frantically send a signal and
(They will retreat)
Up the stairs, Bedside table
Another radio
The news man, full of woe
Will tell us how far they’ve gone
The time has finally come
Time I begin to transmit
The sirens going off outside
Are begging me to do what’s right
Didn’t you hear what the news man said?
What the hell’s the point
When your family’s dead?
No, don’t be like that! I still have hope
That they’re still out there
And there’s more of them
An introduction to the radio operator who lives alone in a dense forest and finds enjoyment tinkering with his radio equipment every night.
After calling it a night, the radio operator is woken by a strange sound that echoed through the dark sky.
He witnesses what he perceives as a beautiful meteor shower over the horizon. Little did he know, these were creatures raining down on earth encased in crystalline eggs.
The operator hears terrible news on the television, but he is too hypnotized to connect it to what he has just seen.
A suite of unusual transmissions the operator receives while messing with his equipment.
He digs deeper and discovers the creatures of which the news man spoke of are receiving orders over radio waves in Morse code which they had studied from afar during their journey through space.
He is pulled out of his concentration by a horned mechanical creature known as “offspring” that has entered his home. He manages to destroy it with a hammer that he’d left on the table.
The operator now somewhat realises the weight of the situation and builds a large and cutting edge transceiver in hopes of sending a powerful retreat signal to make the invaders and their colony leave.
After carrying his newly built transceiver through the woods in search of a safer spot, the operator tries to send the signal when he is suddenly ambushed by more of the offspring creatures and a giant worm-like one shining a bright light on them from above. He quickly sends a weaker signal, making all nearby offspring retreat instead.
The operator continues through the forest where he is startled by the piercing sound of a battle worm being slain by a squad of soldiers. He then comes across a large French-style manor which he enters and finds it uninhabited. He advances and discovers a room populated with around a dozen dead bodies.
Struck with sudden realization and grief, he presses forward and finds another radio in one of the bedrooms. After tuning into the news once more, he discovers just how much devastation has been happening all around him.
The operator defeats his feelings of hopelessness and doubt and successfully transmits the retreat order to the entire world. The invaders then dug close to the core of the Earth and remained there for the rest of history. However, the transceiver catches fire and burns the château to the ground with the operator inside.
